CREATIVE CONCEPT

The starting point of my artistic work is an action in present time.
The possibility to act is undisputable evidence of the present.
Since we are existing here, where there are a lot of arguments from the past and exstence of th future is still unproved, the possibility to form the events is the basic act, which is able to summarize the whole theme of my work.
The concentrated joy of the present moment, while using the criteria of minimalist conceptualism, allows to speak about the artistic work clear from narcotic substance, psychological ailment or fake creative suffering.
The lie in any form must be ignored. This is my basic moral position.
Artwork for me is an object in space, which confirms an authentic fact, witnesses an event or concrete incident. The past action can immediately be reflected in a concrete object or it can be only indicative.
In my work, I do not strive to humiliate or harm anyone, to analyze or clarify anything, I suggest enjoy one’s ability to notice and perform adequate changes.

Descriptions of the artworks:

In the year 1998, I have swallowed the metal ball of 0,5 cm length in order to install it in the “gallery” of my stomach. The intallation fact I have fixed while making an X-ray photo of my stoach. I have intalled the ball in the exhibition, describing it: ”This ball was intalled in the stomach of J.L.”.

In the year 2001, I have walked 312 km on foot. I wanted to persuade that physical human body can be means of transportation even in this time of highly developed technologies. Wishing this act to aquire some material expression, I have walked by railways, every kilometer photographing the distance marking stakes. In the show I was demonstrating a photograph album as a prove of my trip on foot.

In the autumn of the year 2001 I have participated in the poster exhibition on advertising stands, organized by the association of the Lithuanian interdisciplinary artists. I have chosen history to be advertised. Using the space on the stand, I have printed a poster with a XV cetury map of Great Dutchy of Lithuania, in which the lands of Lithuania stretch from the Baltic to the Black sea and which is one of the main objects of mythologisation of national history.

In the period of 2001-2003 I have never gone outside Lithuanian territory, this can be proved by no custom stamps in my passport. During these years I have asked all my acquaintences going abroad to bring me the photographed waste-bins from the countries they went. In this way I have gathered a collection of over 60 pictures, which objects and participants create a certain aesthetic value.

In the year 2003, I went to Venice Biennial to see the exhibition. After buying a ticket and apprehending that the aim is almost reached, I have decided not to go to the show. After bringing the unused ticket, I demonstrated it in the show as an object proving this fact.

2003 05 10-11 was an obligatory referendum on the Lithuanian membership in EU. I have participated in it, so showing my civil activity, but the bulletin, which suggested 2 cathegories “Yes” and “No”, I have taken with me. In this way, my opinion and my possibility to vote remained with me. I have demonstrated this work in the exhibition “2 Show” in the following way: it consisted of a framed authentic voting bulletin and the title “The civil voice”.

Since the year 2000 I am making the separate cicle of works, which have direct links with the people from the circle of my acquaintences. I think, the fact that their last names or some other characteristics would not be recognisable in some other contexts, should not diminish their value.

1. In the year 1997 Kostas Bogdanas has made an artwork – he printed postcards with the inscription “I am an artist”. Afterwards he sticked a post stamp with reproductions of Lithuanian painter of the beginning of the 20th century K. Èiurlionis and sent the letters to all the people he knew. In the year 2000, I have signed a contract with him that he would not contradict that one letter from this inscription belongs to me. I have shown this post-card in the exhibition, adding the title: “according to the agreement, the letter “A” from Kostas Bogdanas piece belongs to Juozas Laivys”

2. In the year 2000 Evaldas Jansas has published an autobiographic book “Odė Rutinai”. I have acquired one copy of it and put it in the place known to me. Information on this place I have put in the metal capsule with an inscription “The information on the place where one of Evaldo Jansas’ book “Ode Rutinai” copies is stored” and have demonstrated in the exhibition “2 Show”.

3. In the year 2001 I have decided and performed the following act: I posed for the painter Gryte Pintukaite, I treat posing as my work, that is why I demonstrate this portrait with an inscription “Juozas Laivys has posed for a painter Grytė Pintukaitė and treats it as his work”.

In the nearest five years I am obliged to count the titles of all my solo exhibitions according to the place they will be in. The counting is performed according to the formula: The title of the show is a difference of distance between the exhibition space and the nearest maternity hospital and also between the funerary house and the exhibition venue in steps.

Titles of my recent exhibitions:
2004 steps, exhibition house in Siauliai
849 steps, gallery “Arka”, Vilniuje
