While thinking about a suitable text, I was thinking about a different kinds of identities and concentrated on desires… in relation to Lithuanian (local) society … I felt like I did not want to think about new media this time, as I do, so I thought more of societal desires and different notions of identity. Also I was conscious of the method, which resembles a game… which summarizes the text. So I didn’t think very seriously on these texts..

The first texts I chose was on telepresence from Lev Manovich book The Language of New Media … I was thinking about desires… and I found that it (telepresence) gives a possibility for people to get some divine features with the help… to resign corporality, to feel more free, to be in different places where physically we can’t be. I think that the desire in our society is very present…it is possible to say that telepresence is more real than physical presence as people who don’t appear on TV or on the net… don’t exist in some ways in society. I chose this small chapter in relation to this.

I chose a text off of C theory that is not typical… “what is cool”… I chose that text of the category cool, also because one of the desires in our society is that everyone wants to be cool, but no one knows what that really means. I thought VILMA character should be cool… a flexible category that is very open in terms of characteristics. New Media in this way can be treated as something cool, it’s fashionable…

“Will information societies be welfare societies”
Actually this text I chose thinking about collective identities and desires, and actually more thinking about the Lithuanian present situations. For example in the last few years we have attempted while trying to identify ourselves with different kinds of collective identities – EU, NATO, information society…. And actually now when we are members of EU and NATO and we are trying to build up this information and welfare society… in all these trials to identify and build up in these societies… for that wealth we seek – what does it mean. I thought that the title was correct- if the information we are trying to build will be a welfare society…if we have one new computer in the office, will it change anything… it is not just a matter of statistics… it is a matter of understanding and belonging to identities, not to build them in one day and feel like it is “real”…

The texts are different, but the categories of desires joins these texts… They are on different levels, but over time I was thinking it is difficult to find a synthesis between the Manovich and ’What is cool’. But looking closer the information society goes again with the Manovich despite that the Manovich is philosophical while the Anders Henten text deals with economic theme… the text on cool category is like characteristically of contemporary culture…like information and telepresence…
I can’t say I identify with these texts, I found the problematics interesting and actual, topical. In some ways I agree and disagree, actually I found these problematics were related to contemporary Lithuania… maybe not Manovich… but two years ago there was a panel organized on e-working and teleworking, and I gave a speech there… and somehow it was close to this..
